The Moscow City Court sentenced political scientist Demuri Voronin, who was involved in one of the episodes of the case of journalist Ivan Safronov, to 13 years and three months in a strict regime colony.

As Interfax reports with reference to the press service of the court, Voronin, like Safronov, was found guilty of treason under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Voronin was sentenced on February 17, 2023, but it became known about him only now, when he has already entered into legal force.

Voronin was arrested in Moscow in February 2021. The prosecution believed that Safronov allegedly gave Voronin information about the activities of the Russian military in Syria, and Voronin had already forwarded this data to representatives of the University of Zurich in Switzerland and German intelligence (BND).

Voronin, according to lawyers, immediately admitted guilt, however, when questioned in the Safronov case in court, he indicated that he had slandered the journalist.

Despite this, Safronov was sentenced to 22 years in a strict regime colony.

Ivan Safronov was found guilty of two episodes of treason. At the same time, Safronov himself, despite long-term detention in jail and strong pressure, did not admit guilt and refused all the deals offered to him with the investigation, pointing out that the case against him was fabricated.
