"Work continues to expand the network of correctional centers for serving sentences of those sentenced to forced labor. As of January 1 of this year, the number of correctional centers created reached 367 with the possibility of accommodating more than 40 thousand convicts in them", - Gostev said, quoted by the press service of the Federal Penitentiary Service (quoted by TASS).
According to the director of the service, forced labor contributes to "improving the effectiveness of the social adaptation of convicts, preparing them for civilian life, as well as compensation for the damage caused by them." Such institutions, unlike correctional colonies, operate on the basis of ordinary enterprises, and convicts at this time live in dormitories. They are also not under escort and have the opportunity to visit municipalities where the correctional center is located. The average salary of those sentenced to forced labor is 20-24 thousand rubles, while those employed in production in correctional colonies, according to experts, receive no more than 10 thousand rubles, TASS notes.
According to the agency, in 2021, there were 117 correctional centers in the structure of the Federal Penitentiary Service, designed for 8,700 people. Earlier, the Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation Konstantin Chuichenko said that 80 thousand places should be created in 2024 to serve this type of alternative punishment. In total, 433 thousand people were registered in correctional colonies and pre-trial detention centers as of the beginning of the year.
