Former head of the Central Election Commission Vladimir Churov has died

On March 22, the former head of the Central Election Commission, Vladimir Churov, died in Moscow. As Vedomosti writes, referring to ex-deputy head Leonid Ivlev. More than a week ago, Churov underwent surgery, he had a massive heart attack.

On March 17, the former head of the CEC turned 70 years old. He headed the Election Commission for about ten years. In the 1990s, he began working in the Committee on External Relations of the Administration of St. Petersburg. He worked there from 1991 to 2003, including five years under the leadership of Vladimir Putin (supervised the structure from 1991 to 1996).

In 2003, he became a State Duma deputy from the LDPR. Four years later he was appointed to the CEC, he was elected chairman. After the scandal over the Moscow elections in 2009, the LDPR left the State Duma meeting room and demanded Churov's resignation. In 2019, he handed over the post to Ella Pamfilova.
