A poll on holding a referendum on renaming the city to Stalingrad has started in Volgograd. This was announced by the co-chairman of the public council for the study of public opinion on the return of the historical name to the city, Chairman of the Volgograd City Council of Veterans Alexander Strukov.

"From today, initiative groups will work in the districts of the city [Volgograd] to study public opinion. Today we still have one district - Dzerzhinsky. Groups will work in three districts tomorrow. And so on until the end of the week", - Strukov said in an interview with TASS.

The interlocutor of the agency clarified that according to the results of the population survey, a decision will be made by next week on the need for a referendum on renaming the city to Stalingrad. He also clarified that the study of public opinion on this issue will be carried out at meetings with public organizations. A meeting is scheduled for Monday, which will be attended by more than 100 people.

As the agency notes, earlier Volgograd veterans made a proposal to return the historical name to the hero city. In this regard, the governor of the region Andrey Bocharov has created a public council for preliminary study of public opinion on the renaming of Volgograd to Stalingrad. In a February All-Russia Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) poll, 67% of the population rather did not support this initiative.
