Leo Bokeria: "I have seen a lot of how our patients are humiliated abroad"

"I can talk about cardiovascular surgery, and I can talk about our center and about a number of centers of federal subordination, where it's not that it's not worse (than in the West)... I've just been to those (foreign) clinics, operated in those clinics, and I can say that the first and most important thing is the attitude towards the patient.

I have seen many cases of humiliating treatment of our patients, just humiliating.

And you don't have any rights, you come just as a patient, and who are you? You paid the money, but they, you know, are not responsible for you.

He operated and then wrote something like that, and – what are the claims? You came by yourself, agreed to the operation, paid the money.

But with us, everything is different.

I will say one seditious thing, I have already said it several times... It seems to me that children are usually taken (abroad).

And it seems to me that moms themselves often want to go and see (the country)… I'm very sorry, but it seems to me that it is. (crosses himself – editor's note") I didn't ask any of the adults who are going to be operated on abroad.

Yes, nothing is considered (that it is better to be treated abroad – editor's note), our institute is packed with patients! And not only our institute.

Today we are probably doing ten times more operations in the country than we did five years ago. I say this as the chief specialist in cardiovascular surgery. Every year I make such collections about what is being done in the country.And our quantity, quality, and diversity are growing all the time – therefore, there is no such problem, I say absolutely responsibly.

Another thing is that, of course, not all clinics, as in other countries, work on the same conditions. It is clear that few people have the gigantic experience of the Bakulevsky Center.

We do five thousand operations a year on a stopped heart, on an open heart.

Let them name me some clinic abroad that would do so much.

Yes, there is not a single such clinic, not in your America, anywhere.

I know the situation very well, I am an honorary member of the American College of Surgeons, this is the most prestigious title there, and they did not just choose me. And I can say, the Mayo Brothers Clinic, they do half as much as we do. I trained there a quarter of a century ago.

I don't mean that our "country is ahead" until that time has come.

But regarding our Bakulevsky Center, yes. And this happened five years ago already.

This happened, firstly, due to the fact that we have existed since 1956.

Secondly, due to the fact that there was such a great surgeon Vladimir Burakovsky, after whom the building on Rublevsky Highway is named.

«Я могу говорить о сердечно-сосудистой хирургии, и могу говорить о нашем центре и о целом ряде центров федерального подчинения, где не то чтобы не хуже (чем на Западе)... Я просто бывал в тех (иностранных) клиниках, оперировал в тех клиниках, и могу сказать, что первое, самое главное, это отношение к пациенту.

Я видел много случаев унизительного отношения к нашим пациентам, просто унизительного.

А у тебя никаких прав нет, ты приезжаешь просто как пациент, и кто ты такой? Ты деньги заплатил, но они, понимаете, за вас не отвечают.

Он прооперировал и дальше написал что-то такое, и – какие претензии? Ты приехал сам, дал согласие на операцию, заплатил деньги.

А у нас же всё по-другому.

Я скажу одну крамольную вещь, я уже несколько раз это говорил... Мне кажется, обычно (за рубеж) везут детей.

И мне кажется, что просто сами мамочки часто хотят поехать и посмотреть (страну)… Я очень извиняюсь, но мне кажется, что это так. (крестится – прим. «НИ»)

Никого из взрослых, которые едут оперироваться за границу, я не спрашивал.

Да ничего не считается (что лучше лечиться за границей – прим. НИ»), у нас институт забит пациентами! И не только наш институт.

Сегодня мы делаем, наверное, в десять раз больше операций в стране, чем делали пять лет назад. Я это говорю, как главный специалист по сердечно-сосудистой хирургии. Каждый год я делаю сборники такие о том, что делается в стране.

И у нас всё время растёт и количество, и качество, и разнообразие – поэтому этой проблемы нет, говорю совершенно ответственно.

Другое дело, что, конечно, не все клиники, как и в других странах, на одинаковых условиях работают. Понятно, что опытом Бакулевского центра, гигантским, мало кто располагает.

Мы в год делаем пять тысяч операций на остановленном сердце, на открытом сердце.

Пускай мне назовут какую-нибудь клинику за рубежом, которая бы столько делала.

Да нет ни одной такой клиники, ни в вашей Америке, нигде.

Я очень хорошо знаю ситуацию, я почётный член американского колледжа хирургов, это самое престижное звание там, и они же не просто так меня выбрали. И я могу сказать, клиника братьев Мейо, они делают в два раза меньше, чем мы. Я там стажировался четверть века назад.

Я не имею в виду, что наша «страна опередила», пока это время не наступило.

Но относительно нашего Бакулевского центра – да. И это произошло лет пять назад уже.

Это произошло, во-первых, благодаря тому, что мы существуем с 1956 года.

Во-вторых, благодаря тому, что был такой великий хирург Владимир Бураковский, именем которого назван корпус на Рублёвском шоссе.

В-третьих, в конце концов выросла команда не только хирургов, но и анестезиологов, реаниматологов, диагностов – то есть всё, что надо, в самом лучшем виде есть в Бакулевском центре и в целом ряде других центров (в России).  

Мы продолжаем ежегодные съезды сердечно-сосудистых хирургов, где обмениваемся опытом несколько дней, мы ездим друг к другу. Я долгие годы ездил с показательными операциями по другим городам, и другие хирурги, естественно.

Центр работает и получает одобрение от медицинского сообщества. В этом смысле, мы сегодня в уравновешенном состоянии. Только вперёд».
