Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States and the first former leader of the country, who was charged with committing a criminal offense, was arrested the day before. He was charged with 34 counts - it concerns the case of forgery of financial documents of the Trump Organization company when paying money to former porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election campaign.
Trump was formally arrested in Manhattan. According to US procedural law, arrest is a mandatory part of bringing charges after a grand jury decision. The handcuffs were not put on the politician, and they also freed him from almost all additional procedures: they were not photographed, fingerprints were taken earlier. Despite the fact that the defense assumed no more than a half-hour arrest, Trump was held in court for about two hours. Perhaps this is due to Trump's consultations with lawyers on each of the 34 counts.
Alvin Bragg, the New York prosecutor, said that Donald Trump falsified financial documents to hide crimes related to the 2016 presidential election. Investigators insist that lawyer Michael Cohen paid former porn actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep her quiet about the alleged connection with Trump, and these data would not have been revealed during his election campaign. The expenses were compensated to the lawyer at the expense of the Trump Organization.
Trump is charged with "falsifying business documents of the first degree" (Falsifying business records in the first degree) in order to commit another offense. What kind of "other crime" is in question is not indicated in the text of the document.
The former president did not make a deal with the investigation - he did not admit guilt in exchange for a reduced sentence. After the trial, he returned to Florida to his Mar-a-Lago estate. He did not allow the violations of the law incriminated to him by the New York court, and, "therefore, there is no case".
"For the first time in history, a failed prosecutor is bringing charges against a former US president on the grounds that all lawyers and analysts say there is no case here. And he knew about it, which is even worse," the accused Trump said.
He called the trial "harassment" and stressed that he refused to settle the case in a pre-trial manner, despite the corresponding proposal from Bragg. Trump also accused the Democrats of using the law to interfere in the election campaign, which will be next year. Todd Blanche, the lawyer of the 45th American leader, declared the trial political and pointed out that there were no facts to support the accusation.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban supported Trump and urged him to "keep fighting".
