Businessman Alexander Mamut, former co-owner of Rambler and owner of Gazeta publications.ru and Lenta.ru, previously left the country and now plans to create a new, liberal publication abroad.

One of the businessman's acquaintances told the publication that he now lives in In the UK, then in France. He is extremely unwilling to be on the sanctions list, so he intends to become a «good Russian, » the source of the publication noted. To this end, he decided to create a new media in the West that would defend liberal ideas.

According to the source, in matters of creating a new media, he consulted with Sergey Guriev. Guriev himself denied the meeting with the businessman to the publication.

Recall that Alexander Mamut has been under US sanctions since 2018. It was not included in the EU sanctions list. In Russia, he has practically no profitable assets left. He sold his 45% in Rambler to Sberbank back in 2020. As of 2020, the businessman's fortune was estimated at $ 2.3 billion. According to Forbes magazine, he was ranked 42nd in the list of the 200 richest businessmen in the country.

Alexander Mamut's career was developing rapidly. In 1990, he created his own law firm, ALM-Consulting. In 1993, he became the founder and chairman of the Board of the commercial bank «Project Finance Company». At the same time, he became one of the founders of the Seventh Continent trading network. He worked as an adviser on economic issues in the Presidential administration of Russia and as an adviser to the head of the presidential administration Alexander Voloshin.

In the early 2000s, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of MDM Bank, Troika Dialog and Ingosstrakh. In 2006, he founded SUP, which acquired the LiveJournal service in 2007. Later, he began to develop the SPAR retail network in the country. In 2012, he became the sole owner of SUP Media. In April 2014, as a managing shareholder, he headed Rambler &Co. He also owned Cinema Park and Formula Cinema chains. He left the country last June.
