About 300 Russian paratroopers from the Pskov division will take part in the exercises Slavic Brotherhood on the territory of Belarus. Earlier, the conduct of military exercises amid the ongoing political crisis in Belarus was condemned by the leaders of several countries.

The Russian-Belarusian exercises "Slavic Brotherhood - 2020" will be held at the Brestsky training ground on September 14-25. According to TASS, the exercises are scheduled and have been held annually since 2015. The decision to hold them, according to the Defense Ministry, was made back in October 2019.

“Among others, units of the Pskov Guards Airborne Force will take part in the event. In the course of the exercise, the paratroopers of the two countries will work out the issues of coordination of units in the performance of tactical tasks", - the news agency reports.

In addition to 300 servicemen, about 70 units of military and special equipment of the guards air assault formation will be involved in the exercises. It is expected that after the completion of the exercises, the paratroopers will return home to the territory of the Russian Federation.

The holding of military exercises against the background of the ongoing political crisis in Belarus was condemned by the leaders of several countries. According to Serbian Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin, the European Union put forward a demand for his country to abandon the exercises in Belarus, as a result, Belgrade decided not to participate in the event and freeze all international military exercises for the next six months.

Mass protests demanding the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko have been going on in Belarus for over a month. Since August 9, citizens have taken to the streets and staged strikes, protesting against the falsifications committed in the presidential elections and tough actions of the security forces to suppress peaceful protests.
