Emergencies Minister Yevgeny Zinichev died on Wednesday, September 8, trying to save the life of 63-year-old cameraman and film director Alexander Melnik.

The miller slipped while standing at the cliff and fell into the water. The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations jumped after him to save him. Both did not survive.

The 63-year-old Nika award-winning filmmaker is known for his work on the science fiction film New Land (2008) and the drama Territory (2015). He graduated from the Odessa Hydrometeorological Institute with a degree in hydrological engineering. For some time he worked at a polar station in the Laptev Sea, participated in expeditions in the basins of the Arctic and Pacific oceans.

In Norilsk, where the incident took place, the filmmaker chose the location for filming his new documentary about the development of the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route, according to the LIFE SHOT Telegram channel.

The death of the head of the EMERCOM was reported earlier on Wednesday at the department. The incident occurred during an interdepartmental exercise in the Arctic zone, which was held in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

Zinichev headed the Ministry of Emergencies since May 2018. Prior to that, he was the deputy director of the FSB, the head of the FSB for the Kaliningrad region, and the acting governor of this region.
