Power and prison: which heads of state went to places of exile

It must be said that such processes occur more often in less democratic countries, which, no doubt, is France. As recently as a year ago, former President of Kyrgyzstan Almasbek Atambayev was sentenced to 11 years in prison for corruption. The court found him guilty of releasing the mafioso Asis Batukaev from prison. Atambayev was deprived not only of all the awards, but part of his property was confiscated.

Former Brazilian President Inacio Lula da Silva received 13 years without a month in prison on corruption charges. The court found him guilty of bribery and money laundering. Silva helped a construction company secure orders from the state-owned oil concern Petrobras in exchange for renovations on his estate near San Paolo. Silva argued that the estate did not belong to him, but to a familiar entrepreneur. In 2019, Silva was released from custody by a decision of the Brazilian Supreme Court.

Former Egyptian President Muhammad Murzi was sentenced to death for helping terrorists to escape prison in 2011 with the help of Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah, in addition to this episode, he was accused of espionage, incitement to terror and non-observance of state secrets.

Former president of Israel Moshe Katsav was sentenced in 2011 of rape and forced sex to 7 years in prison. He became the first president in Israel to go to jail. Katsav was imprisoned for sex offenders.

Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye received 20 years in prison for corruption and other crimes. The verdict entered into force in January 2021. The court awarded the former politician a monetary fine of 13.5 million euros. The Conservative Party politician was involved in a massive scandal that shook the country in 2017 and brought hundreds of thousands of people to the streets. In 2017, Park was impeached and later arrested for abuse of power, corruption, coercion and other crimes. The daughter of a former South Korean military dictator was the first woman to be elected to the country's top post. Her predecessor, Lee Moon-bak, is also imprisoned for corruption - in 2020 he received 15 years in prison.

Former President of Liberia Charles Tylor was sentenced by the Hague Tribunal to 50 years in prison. Taylor, 65, has been charged with war crimes, torture and rape. For weapons, Taylor received "blood diamonds" from the fighting in Sierra Leone.
