The Spanish parliament proposed to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh

The appeal, drawn up by the deputies of the lower and upper chambers of the Spanish parliament, calls for the recognition of the NKR as an independent state, which will give the people of Artsakh (the Armenian historical name of Nagorno-Karabakh) the right to life and peaceful development.

The reason for the intervention of the Spanish parliamentarians was the hostilities that unfolded in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh at the end of September and have not stopped until now.

“Since September 27, 2020, the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, with the support of terrorist organizations from Turkey, have started an aggressive war against the Republic of Artsakh. Azerbaijan's large-scale armed attack on the Republic of Artsakh is accompanied by serious violations of the norms of international humanitarian law”, - EADaily is quoted as saying.

The parliamentarians said that the Azerbaijani-Turkish armed formations are bombing cities, villages and civilian objects in Artsakh, civilians and journalists have suffered from the shelling. After the media disseminated information that on September 29 an F-16 fighter of the Turkish Air Force, based at the Ganja airport in Azerbaijan, shot down a Su-25 attack aircraft of the Armenian Air Force, which was carrying out tasks to protect the airspace of Armenia, in Spain this was regarded as clear evidence Turkish intervention. The fact of Azerbaijan's use of cluster missiles in Europe was called a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

“Ignoring the constant calls of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries and the international community for the immediate restoration of the ceasefire regime, guided by the goal of resolving the conflict by force, Azerbaijan and Turkey continue large-scale hostilities to this day”, - the parliamentarians note.

Based on the current situation, the Spanish MPs called on the international community to recognize the right of the people of Artsakh to self-determination.

"In the current situation, the international recognition of Artsakh is the only effective mechanism for restoring peace and security in the region", - the message says.

In total, the letter was signed by 37 members of the Congress of Deputies and the Senate of Spain.

Nagorno-Karabakh is de jure considered a part of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan calls this territory occupied by the Armenian side. The former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region announced its secession from the Azerbaijan SSR even before the collapse of the USSR. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev previously stated that he does not see any other way, except for the military one, to resolve the situation that has not been resolved for almost 30 years.

The war between Azerbaijan and Armenia for control in Nagorno-Karabakh resumed on September 27. Mobilization was announced in both countries. Azerbaijan is supported in the conflict by Turkey, Armenia - by Iran. In the hostilities, more than 3,000 soldiers were killed, including foreign mercenaries. The authorities of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic announced the deaths of at least 31 civilians during the fighting.
