The Permanent Mission of Russia to the European Union has sent a letter to the European Parliament with questions about the situation with the opposition leader Alexey Navalny. Diplomats pointed out inconsistencies in the accusations against Moscow.

The corresponding commentary was published on the website of the Russian mission. The document says that such a publication is necessary in connection with a powerful information campaign launched in the media and official circles of the European Union. The incident is urged to be considered as transparently as possible.

Diplomats emphasize that the accusations against Russia are illogical. The Permanent Mission asks the question “is there any justification for the alleged decision of the Russian authorities to“ poison ”Navalny with a military-grade substance in a Russian city with a population of half a million, and then to do everything possible to save his life and release him for treatment to Germany, where the Novichok poison can identify”.

The authors of the statement also point to the level of support for the politician, which "barely reaches two percent". The Permanent Mission refers to the data of the Levada Center from July of this year. The publication also says that Navalny was accompanied in Berlin by police officers and intelligence agents - “why?” The authors ask.

The document says that Germany refused to cooperate with the Russian Federation and does not publish the results of toxicological examinations in the public domain. Diplomats emphasize that Moscow has proposed creating a joint commission to investigate the incident with the oppositionist and blogger, but the Western side does not agree to this. In addition, they ignore the fact that for years Western specialists and NATO experts have been developing chemicals associated with the Novichok group, and in the United States, for example, they have issued over 150 patents for their use. Why, diplomats ask, is it only declared that the poison was allegedly developed in the USSR.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called not to politicize the situation with Navalny.

Meanwhile, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell proposed to name the package of sanctions after those who violate human rights after Navalny. The Federation Council indicated that these plans have no legal force.
