Researchers at Northwestern University and George Washington University have developed the world's first temporary pacemaker - a wireless, battery-free, fully implantable device that disappears when it is no longer needed.

All components of the pacemaker are biocompatible and are naturally absorbed by body fluids within five to seven weeks without the need for surgical removal, reports science journalist Dmitry Klein.

The fully implantable device is light and thin - 250 microns thick and weighs less than half a gram - and is powered completely without external wires by an external antenna using near-field communication protocols - the same technology used in smartphones for electronic payments.
