A powerful eruption of the Shiveluch volcano may occur in the coming days in Kamchatka, the fall of ash is predicted on the territory of five regions of the peninsula.

According to Interfax, citing data from the regional EMERCOM Directorate and the calculations of scientists from the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IV&S) of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the danger of a powerful volcanic eruption is very high, in this regard, tourists were forbidden to approach the foot.

"The eruption may be accompanied by the rise of ash volcanic clouds up to 18 km above sea level, which poses a danger to aviation, as well as extended incandescent pyroclastic flows that pose a threat to nearby people", - the message says.

Last weekend, the Shiveluch volcano ejected a vapor-gas column with an admixture of ash to a height of 3 km. Rescuers warned that near the volcano there may be an excess of the maximum permissible gas concentration during steam and gas emissions. Moreover, near Shiveluch there is a chance to fall into ashfall.

Airlines in Kamchatka were advised to change the routes of aircraft movement due to the increased activity of the Shiveluch volcano, warning that an orange level of aviation hazard was set. Ashfalls are predicted in the nearest settlements of Ust-Kamchatsky, Bystrinsky, Milkovsky, Karaginsky and Tigilsky districts.

Locals and tourists are strongly advised to stay away from the volcano.

As RIA Novosti notes, Shiveluch intensified after the 8.2 earthquake that occurred on July 29, 2021 in the Alaska Peninsula. The lava obelisk, which had formed in the crater of the volcano since the beginning of this year, collapsed, magmatic material is squeezed out in its place, and large collapses of hot ground occur.

Scientists warned that being near this volcano poses a danger to human life and health. However, the news of the awakened volcano continues to attract tourists to the region who are approaching Shiveluch, despite the warnings of the Ministry of Emergencies.

Shiveluch is the northernmost and one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka. The old name is Suelich, which in the language of the indigenous people meant "smoking mountain". Its age is about 60-70 thousand years, its height is 3283 meters. Powerful ash ejections up to 10 kilometers in height have been occurring from the volcano's mouth for several years. The last major lava eruption occurred in 2019. The height of the lava dome of the active Young Shiveluch is 2.5 km. It is located 450 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and 45 km from the village of Klyuchi, Ust-Kamchatsky district. The village closest to the volcano has a population of 5,000.
