Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, said that the authorities should reckon with the opinions of many people who support the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal. Furgal was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder that took place 15 years ago.

“There are a lot of people who support the ex-governor. This is a phenomenon that must be reckoned with", - Interfax quotes Medvedev as saying. He added that people have the right to express their civic position if they do so in a legal manner, but they must remember about sanitary and epidemiological standards during the spread of the epidemic, because if the number of cases starts to grow in the country, these consequences will affect every inhabitant of the region.

Furgal was arrested on July 9. He is suspected of organizing murders and attempted murder 15 years ago. The governor was removed from office. After his arrest, residents of the region took to mass protests in support of him, which continue to this day. The leader of the LDPR party, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, believes that the deputy was "removed" because his popularity in society was growing rapidly. According to a recent Levada Center poll, Furgal is among the politicians with the highest level of citizen confidence . He is in seventh place in the whole country.
