Former chief of the Russian General Staff Kvashnin dies of coronavirus

The death of the general was announced by the chief of staff of the Club of military leaders Nikolay Deryabin.

“Anatoly Kvashnin died in Moscow today. The reason is coronavirus", - RIA Novosti quotes Deryabin as saying.

As noted by TASS, Anatoly Kvashnin was born on August 15, 1946 in Ufa in the family of a military man. In 1969 he graduated from the auto-tractor faculty and the military department of the Kurgan Machine-Building Institute. He served as a lieutenant engineer, commanded a tank platoon of the 201st motorized rifle division of the Turkestan military district.

In 1976 he graduated from the Military Academy of Armored Forces named after V.I. R. Ya. Malinovsky, in 1989 graduated with honors from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces.

Candidate of Sociological Sciences (1997). Doctor of Military Sciences (2004). Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences (2000).

After graduating from the General Staff, he was appointed to the Belarusian Military District as First Deputy Commander of the 28th Army (Grodno). He commanded the 7th Tank Army (Borisov). In August 1992, Anatoly Kvashnin was transferred to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, where he served as First Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff.

From December 1994 to January 1995, Kvashnin commanded the United Group of Forces in Chechnya, led all the troops of the North Caucasian District. He headed the General Staff in 1997. Later, from 2004 to 2010, Anatoly Kvashnin served as the plenipotentiary representative of the president in the Siberian Federal District.
