The chief Rabbi of Russia, Berl Lazar, contracted a coronavirus infection, he is under the supervision of doctors and his condition does not cause much concern.

This was reported by TASS in the press service of Berl Lazar.

As Lazar himself told the MBH media, “it’s okay”, his illness is mild, he felt unwell for two days, “he had almost no temperature” and he was “almost recovered”.

As Kommersant recalls, with the onset of the spread of coronavirus, the country's chief rabbi called on Jews to volunteer to help people in need. He supported the closure of synagogues, talking about the priority of people's health.

In late May, Lazar announced that the COVID-19 pandemic, which still prevents people from gathering and praying in many countries, has become their punishment for disunity. To correct the situation, in his opinion, it is possible if people again begin to love, respect and support each other more.

Berl Lazar is 56 years old. He was elected Chief Rabbi of Russia by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia in 1999. In 2005, Russian President Vladimir Putin included him in the Public Chamber.

According to the latest data in Russia, about 468 thousand infected with coronavirus were detected, more than 5.8 thousand people died.
