The investigation did not name those who ordered the murder of Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya. The statute of limitations on this case expires on October 7.

Based on Article 78 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, a person is released from criminal liability if 15 years have passed since the date of the commission of an especially grave crime. Politkovskaya was killed exactly 15 years ago. She was shot with four point-blank shots, including in the head. This happened on October 7, 2006 at the entrance of a house on Lesnaya Street in Moscow.

Those who ordered the murder have officially evaded responsibility. Novaya Gazeta reports that they intend to seek the resumption of the investigation in this case and the disclosure of the hirer of a contract killer's name.

On July 18, Anna Politkovskaya's mother, Raisa Mazepa, died in Moscow, before the trial of those who ordered the murder of her daughter.

It's worth reminding that in 2014, two defendants in the murder of Politkovskaya - Rustam Makhmudov and Loma-Ali Gaitukayev - were sentenced to life imprisonment. The first was recognized as the performer, the second - the organizer. Also, three people were recognized as intermediaries in the organization of the murder. We are talking about Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, Ibragim and Dzhabrail Makhmudovs. They received 20, 12 and 14 years in prison, respectively. Gaidukaev died in prison in 2017.

In addition, the case of Colonel of the Moscow Main Internal Affairs Directorate Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov was considered in a special order. He is considered one of the leaders of the "outdoor" of the Moscow police, whose officers followed the journalist. Pavlyuchenkov undertook to name those who ordered the crime, but did not. He was sentenced to a minimum term.

Last year, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ordered Russia to pay 50,000 euros in compensation to the Chechen blogger Musa Lomaev, whom Politkovskaya wrote about torture.

Earlier, in 2018, the ECHR awarded Politkovskaya's family compensation in the amount of € 20 thousand for her murder. The court also ruled that the investigation into the murder of the journalist in her home country had been ineffective.
