The indicator of the excess of the number of deaths over the number of births - natural population decline - in Russia for the period from January to August 2021 increased by 71.6% compared to the same period last year.

According to Rosstat, the natural population decline in the country during this period amounted to 595.3 thousand people, while in 2020 the figure was 346.9 thousand.

In the period from January to August, 1.1% fewer children were born in Russia - 928 184 against 938 295 in the same period last year. The number of deaths increased by 18.5% - to 1 million 523 646 people - against 1 million 285 199 in the same period of the pandemic year.

At the same time, compared to 2019, the natural decline in the country's population in 2020 more than doubled. The indicator turned out to be the highest since 2005, when there was a natural decline at the level of 846.6 thousand people.

Rosstat noted that the country's population lost more than half a million people in 2020 - and amounted to 146.17 million.

As of August 1 of this year, the department counted 145.8 million Russians.

It's worth reminding that earlier the natural population decline was partially compensated by the influx of migrants. But now that migrant workers have been sent home, the number of funerals in the country exceeds the number of births by 1.6 times. And in some regions - 2.9 times.
