Virologist, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Cell Proliferation Laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology named after V.A. Engelhardt, Pyotr Chumakov, in an interview with Ura.ru, called the new strain a "live vaccine".

His words in an interview with radio Sputnik were explained by the leading specialist of the Vakcina.ru project, biophysicist Nelly Sosedova.

She expressed the opinion that the virus mutates in a direction that allows it to coexist better with humans.

“In principle, it is not profitable for a virus to kill its owner: the microcosm lives at the expense of the macrocosm. If the host lives and thrives, the virus also lives and thrives. We were waiting for the appearance of that strain, which, as a result of mutations, will turn into one with which a person will normally coexist, this is achieved by both the viral population and the human population. This was the case with the influenza virus and with other respiratory viruses that are susceptible to mutations”, - the Sputnik radio virologist quoted as saying.

She expressed hope that the new strain will improve the epidemiological situation. associated with the infection of the coronavirus.

“Judging by the data reported by our colleagues from South Africa and other countries, with a high degree of probability, omicron is the strain that will turn the tide with the pandemic. Someone gets vaccinated, someone gets sick, and the coronavirus will turn into a seasonal respiratory virus”, - commented Nelly Sosedova.

She also noted that it is inappropriate to compare antibodies formed after an illness with those produced after vaccination.

“It is not entirely correct to compare antibodies after vaccination and after an illness, because we get them at too different prices”, - the specialist explained.

Thus, the easiest and safest way to get immunity to coronavirus is by vaccination.

Earlier, Pyotr Chumakov, in an interview with Ura.ru, said that Omicron could become a live vaccine against coronavirus due to reduced pathogenicity, and after recovery, the patient becomes immune even to disease-causing variants of infection.

“There is an optimistic opinion that now COVID has accelerated through the second phase of evolution. It has become less pathogenic, but at the same time more infectious, which is also good, because in this way, perhaps, nature has created a live vaccine against coronavirus. That is, those people who get sick and carry this strain of coronavirus will become resistant to disease-causing variants”, - says Pyotr Chumakov.

Earlier there was information about the creation of the first PCR-test to identify the Omicron strain. It was developed by the Singapore-based pharmaceutical company Bio Acumen Global.
