Against the background of the coronavirus pandemic, an acute shortage of donor blood supplies was recorded in Russian hospitals.

According to Kommersant with reference to the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA), a "lull" has formed at the donor blood collection points. It is caused not so much by the vacation season as by the campaign to vaccinate the population against coronavirus: after vaccination, the donor is given a medical withdrawal from donating blood. This is due to the fact that donating blood between the first and second vaccinations is prohibited, and after the second component, you need to wait another month.

“The vaccination has confused all our plans, and the traffic light is indecently red”, - the message says.

The donor "traffic light" is a color indication scale that reflects the state of blood supplies. If the color is green, there is blood. Yellow is not enough. Red means severe deficiency.

Such a scale is formed for each blood group separately, indicating the Rh factor.

Due to the lack of blood supplies, donor centers began to invite people not only during the week, but also on weekends. However, so far it has not been possible to replenish the necessary reserves. In this regard, the doctors asked the donors to come to the blood donation points without delay, as soon as they have such an opportunity.

In an interview with radio Sputnik, the honorary donor of Russia, the head of the donor movement and the head of the medical department of the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov, Tigran Muradyan, said that the blood service always works in advance.

“The blood service always works with stocks, there is always a certain stock of blood and components ahead of schedule. But at the same time, there are components such as platelets that have a short shelf life. Here it is necessary that the flow of donors be constant, and when a donor comes for donation, it is very important that he listens to the opinion of the transfusion doctor and to the needs of the blood center or department. That is, for the donor to donate not what he wants, but what the blood center needs”, - Tigran Muradyan said.

The main task now is to replenish the stocks that are now being used, so donors are very much needed, the specialist added.

“Our task is to replenish stocks from where we take blood, components for patients. There is no critical shortage as such, there is no such thing that patients were left without blood. But donors are very much needed to replenish reserves”, - Tigran Muradyan said.

A similar situation developed in the country in April last year, when, due to the introduction of quarantine for covid, many donors were locked in four walls and could not go outside. At the request of doctors worried about the "melting" blood supplies, the authorities of a number of regions were forced to publish special explanations allowing donors to break isolation in order to donate blood.

To become a donor, a person must undergo a mandatory examination: at least once a year to do fluorography and receive a therapist's conclusion that he is fit for health reasons. Over time, donating blood becomes a good habit for many, which keeps them in good shape and makes a person carefully monitor their health. The procedure for taking the "adult" dose - 425 milliliters of blood - takes about ten minutes.

“Then you can have tea and biscuits if you wish. Some people get sick after donating blood: they lose consciousness. But a flock of nurses immediately flies up to them and brings them to their senses. The staff at the station are very friendly. Every time you donate blood, they say “thank you” and you feel that you need and help people”, - RG quotes the words of the donor Alla Ratkova.

When a person donates blood for the first time, it does not immediately go to the sick, but is sent to quarantine. After six months, the donor is usually asked to come and take a second test to make sure that his blood is safe and he does not suffer from latent diseases that do not appear immediately, for example, HIV infection. If a person does not come again and does not pass the test, his blood cannot be used: it will simply be thrown away. According to existing rules, women are allowed to donate blood no more than four times a year, men - no more than five times.

In some countries, donors receive an SMS message every time their blood was requested and, possibly, saved someone's life. Russian donors note that it would be nice to introduce such a notification in the Russian Federation, as it “very motivates” people to voluntarily donate.
