Coronavirus suppresses the immune system, and therefore, an additional, somatic pathology may be superimposed on the disease, quoted Felix Ershov, the scientist-virologist of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the “Evening Moscow” newspaper. As it happens in the case of the normal flu, when the body is weakened, secondary immunodeficiencies can develop on a background of the suppressed immunity.
The virologist noted that the elderly are at risk, and children and young people with strong immunity are much less prone to complications.
- Elderly people may have strokes and heart attacks as complications and various pathologies. In addition, all the same comorbidities as with the flu - bronchitis, meningitis, etc., ”the scientist said.
He added that traditional antibiotics do not help with the fight against coronavirus, and the only effective drug today is interferon. It has a direct effect on the stages of intracellular reproduction of viruses.
At the same time, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaliy Zverev previously stated that drugs created specifically for the treatment of coronavirus infection can be expected no earlier than in a year and a half or two years. He noted that he was "scared" by drugs against other infections that they are trying to "implement in healthcare practice" today.
Note that despite the fact that today everyone is associated with coronavirus with bilateral pneumonia, it is able to affect not only the lungs - in some patients, for example, there were no disturbances in the functioning of this organ, but there was a diffuse consciousness or epileptic symptoms. This was told to Izvestia by Peter the Great, professor of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Andrei Kozlov, head of research in the field of molecular virology and oncology.
“Together with the previously noted loss of taste and smell, such symptoms may indicate coronavirus infection of brain tissue,” said Kozlov.
Nikolai Karpov, an employee of the Institute of Biology of Tyumen State University, spoke about the danger of hemorrhage and its consequences for patients with coronavirus. He believes that the cells of the immune system of a patient infected with COVID-19 begin to actively release cytokines into the blood, and this can lead to the development of encephalopathy - a degenerative lesion of brain tissue.
“It is possible that the virus can penetrate the blood-brain barrier directly into the brain tissue,” the expert noted.
To date, 1,448,992 cases of infection with a new coronavirus infection have been registered in the world. In Russia, 10 131 cases were detected. Over the past day, 1,459 people have been infected with coronavirus in the territory of the Russian Federation.
