According to the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Lukashev, the closure of borders between countries and even regions of the countries was justified at the first stage of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

However, now this no longer makes any sense.

Alexander Lukashev, who is also a director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Vector-borne Diseases at Moscow State Medical University, noted that closing the borders to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection was the right decision except in January-February of this year, but then it was practically not done: many thousands of tourists from China actively traveled around the world. Further, the meaning of the closed borders disappeared more and more with every month of quarantine measures.

“Virus transfers between countries were multiple, it’s not ten drifts, it’s dozens, if not hundreds of drifts of virus between countries. Keeping the borders closed now, in my opinion, is pointless because the virus is so widespread in all countries that the virus is already transmitted across the border will not be of great epidemiological significance", - RIA Novosti quoted the words of Alexander Lukashev. The scientist noted that in every country in the first weeks when the virus appeared there, it was not known about it, and for some time it was impossible to determine its spread.

Restrictions on traveling abroad were partially lifted for Russians on June 8 — we are talking about trips for non-tourist purposes, to study, treat, or to care for sick relatives. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin explained the need for relief from "different life situations".

However, even in April, when international borders were almost completely closed, Russian trips abroad did not stop completely. More than 1,200 Russians have visited South Korea this month, nearly a thousand in Turkey, 128 in Indonesia and one in Taiwan. Recently, the plane of the head of the VTB state corporation, the former deputy prime minister of the government Igor Shuvalov, was noticed crossing the Austrian border. Shuvalov himself assured that he obediently abides by the introduced self-isolation regime, and the board was sent only for his personal belongings.
