Only one out of fifty patients with COVID-19 required artificial ventilation after inhalation with a helium-oxygen mixture.

It was told by the head of the Russian Scientific Society of Immunologists, scientific director of the Institute of Immunology and Physiology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valery Chereshnev.

- The system was tested on the basis of the republican hospital in Komi. We had 50 people. Out of 50 all survived, they were seriously ill. One only was transferred to a ventilator... The experience of being imprisoned in a republican hospital in Syktyvkar gave a positive result, now production is underway, - Chereshnev told RIA Novosti.

According to him, artificial lung ventilation is a heavy burden on the body. Against the background of developing pneumonia in coronavirus, when the respiratory surface decreases sharply, the helium-oxygen mixture heated to 90-95 degrees significantly exceeds artificial ventilation.

He said that microbiologists decided to improve the devices originally used for such inhalations, and to make separate systems of inhaled and exhaled air.

Let us recall that experiments on the use of helium for the treatment of coronavirus began in April. It is known that helium is successfully used for the treatment of acute pulmonary diseases. In the spring, Russian scientists on the basis of the N.I. Sklifosovsky Research Institute for Emergency Medicine began to use helium to treat COVID-19. The principle of operation of the device with which the therapy was carried out is that the patient breathes helium oxide heated to 92 degrees for 15 minutes.

The Russian development aroused interest from the United States and a number of European countries.
