According to one of the leading Russian immunologists, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valery Chereshnev, the use of large quantities of lemons and ginger, which, as it is believed by the common people, can protect against coronavirus infection, will ultimately lead only to the opposite effect.

“How long did the epidemic in China last? From December to April - four and a half months,” Valery Chereshnev said in an interview for Rossiyskaya Gazeta. “We started in March. So, we can assume it will end in mid-July. Certainly only in the case that we succeed in localization of the sources of infection, as it was done in China". However, the academician considers Russian self-isolation measures to be poorly functioning compared to China, and therefore this period may be delayed.

As for lemons and ginger, the rush demand for which in recent days has led to the higher prices or even for the disappearance of these products from the groceries' shelves, according to the immunologist, the excessive consumption of it will only have a perilous impact on the immunity. At the same time, the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia reported that it fixes the stabilization of retail prices for ginger.

“You should not count on the magic effect of adaptogens or a saving dose of an immunomodulator,” said the academician. - Of course, this is a consequence of our everyday delusions and expectation of a miracle. It must be remembered that a reaction of overexcitation will necessarily be followed by a reaction of exhaustion. And exhaustion - this is secondary immunodeficiency: if at that time something provoking acts on the body, then the immune system may not be able to cope with the defense and the person will become ill.

The Rosselkhoznadzor (Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance) noted an increase in imports of ginger and garlic to Russia in the recent days. Against the background of the regime of self-isolation of Russian citizens in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, the import of ginger jumped 12 times, and garlic doubled. Curiously, these products come mainly from China. WHO called not to give up ginger, since it is really able to help restore and to some extent maintain the immune system, but also advised and not to hope for its "healing" properties in the treatment of coronavirus.
