In Russia as a whole, the natural population decline in 2020 amounted to 702 thousand people, an increase of 2.2 times compared to 2019. At the same time, in a number of regions, the population decline increased much more significantly.

So, in St. Petersburg, the natural population decline soared 58 times - from 308 to 17.9 thousand people, RBC reports with reference to Rosstat data. In Tatarstan, the figure grew even more - 72 times - from 180 to 12.9 thousand people.

At the same time, Moscow is leading in terms of absolute population decline. In 2019, the population of the capital increased by 16.2 thousand people, and in 2020 it decreased by 24.6 thousand.

Also, the population decline increased more than the average for Russia, in the Astrakhan region (6 times), in Kamchatka (5.2 times), in the Trans-Baikal Territory (3.3 times) and the Tomsk region (3 times).

Earlier it was reported that for the first quarter 2021 natural population decline in Russia has increased by half compared with the same period of 2020 and amounted to 247 000 people.
