The Russian authorities will introduce mandatory labeling of pets, and the Ministry of Agriculture will prepare the relevant amendments to the draft law “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation in Part of Improving the Legal Regulation of Relations in the Field of Veterinary Medicine”.

Vladimir Burmatov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Ecology, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, told Izvestia that the document was submitted to the chamber last November, it introduces the concept of marking and recording animals in the country. It currently only applies to farm animals. After the amendments are made, this provision will be changed.

Burmatov spoke about messages from citizens asking “where did the cats and dogs disappear from the bill”.

“But people are waiting for their registration most of all, because there are a lot of lost animals, which, if identified, would be easier to find”, - said the head of the State Duma committee.

He also pointed out that, thanks to the norm, it will be possible to hold accountable the owners who throw their pets into the street.

As marking options, there can be a brand or a chip, at the choice of the owner, and the procedure itself will be free.

Earlier it was reported that employees of the State Veterinary Service should take care of the accounting. Animal data will be entered into the Federal State Information System in the field of veterinary medicine. After the bill is approved by the State Duma, the chipping process will begin throughout the country.
