Employers have the right to declare the working day on December 31 not just a shortened one, but a full-fledged paid day off, Rostrud reports.

The last day of the year, December 31, which falls on Thursday, will be shortened for everyone: by law, the day before the public holiday will be one hour shorter for employees. However, employers, on their own initiative, can provide their employees with a day off on this day.

“If such an initiative comes from the employer, then he must decide on the payment for this day off. This can be done by issuing a local normative act, which should provide that the granted day off is subject to payment, " TASS quotes the statement of the deputy head of Rostrud Ivan Shklovts.

As Kommersant clarifies, an employee can apply to the company's management with a statement and receive an additional day of rest on account of the vacation. In addition, the day off can be taken for work on other weekends and holidays, or for overtime worked.

According to RBC , some regions have already declared December 31 inoperative. On this day, residents will rest in more than 30 regions of Russia, including St. Petersburg, Buryatia, Belgorod, Vologda, Oryol, Saratov, Murmansk, Volgograd and Kostroma regions, Chuvashia, Kamchatka, Sakhalin and other regions. At the same time, the authorities of 15 regions refused to recognize December 31 as a day off.

Winter holidays in Russia will last from 1 to 10 January. Starting Monday, January 11, the country will start working again.
