Isolators in Russia are designed for 118.4 thousand people, now they are 94% full, the Federal Penitentiary Service reported.

The Kommersant service emphasized that the limit had not been exceeded, and in May the situation was much worse - then there were 545 more people in the pre-trial detention center. As of August 1, 114,172 people were kept in isolation wards.

In May, Igor Vedinyapin, head of the department for the execution of sentences and special records of the Federal Penitentiary Service, indicated that 50 out of 203 pre-trial detention centers in Russia were overcrowded. He proposed amendments to allow more frequent choice of a measure of restraint not related to detention.

Last year, the number of defendants sent into custody increased by 4% and amounted to 205.3 thousand people. Of these, 90.5 thousand (44%) are accused of crimes of small and medium gravity.
