Photo of the day: US Embassy in Moscow celebrated LGBT flag anniversary

A kind of trolling of Russian statehood was perpetrated by American diplomats by hanging a rainbow flag on the building of the US Embassy in the Russian Federation on the Garden Ring, symbolizing the unity of the representatives of the so-called sexual minorities.

The embassy’s website says:

“Today, the US Embassy in Russia honors the LGBTQ Pride Flag (different spelling is used, LGBT is used more often in Russia, - Ed.) During the celebration of #PrideFlagDay. The LGBTQ flag was created by American artist and activist Gilbert Baker and was first hoisted on June 25, 1978 during the Gay Freedom Day parade in San Francisco. “The symbol of the rainbow was taken from the earliest history of mankind as a symbol of hope”, - Baker wrote in his memoir, Rainbow Warrior. He wanted to convey his belief that the power of society is diverse.

LGBTQ rights are human rights. Human rights are universal. A month of pride is designed to emphasize that everyone deserves to live a life free of hatred, prejudice and persecution..."

Readers appreciated the unusual diplomatic approach in a country known for its intolerance of any dissent, including sexual:

- That's right. It's necessary to fight against homophobia. I would hang out more rainbow flags! And I would also forbid issuing visas to the homophobes.

- Poor are the cops on duty near the embassy. When they see this flag, they already have a reflex - to grab. But here they see it, but they can do nothing.
