Over the month, sales of imported beer fell by 30%

Sales of foreign brands of beer have decreased in Russia, which will allow domestic brewers to compete with large producers. The decline in sales amounted to 30.7% in April.

According to Kommersant, the sales of Russian brands increased against this background. According to NielsenIQ experts, the trend is caused by problems with logistics, as well as the geopolitical crisis.

At the same time, during the last year the rates of sales of foreign beer grew - 22.4%. Taking into account the April decline, since January 2022, the share of imported beer has decreased from 6.2% to 3.8% . The rates of sales of beer of local brands increased from 1.8% to 5.9% , the share increased from 65.3% to 67.6%.

This had a rather negative impact on the premium segment, as this category was dominated by imports. There, sales fell by 4.4% , the share in the high price segment has fallen from 14.6% to 12.9% since the beginning of the year. Sales in the low price segment increased from 4.4% to 6.9% .

Recall that in March of this year, domestic brewers expressed fears that due to the geopolitical situation they would be left without hops, which simply do not exist in Russia (the share of Russian raw materials is only 2% of the needs). One of the possible options for correcting the situation was called growing their own hops in the country. The experts also pointed out that due to the specifics of hop cultivation, the possible period for the implementation of the task is at least five years.
