In 2014, the house of the Shcherbachevs was searched due to the threat of an explosion in the building of the regional prosecutor's office. Then the department received a letter about mining, allegedly signed by Yuri Shcherbachev, while he himself assures that he had never seen the letter and does not know whether a criminal case was initiated. During a search, FSB officers seized three orders, five medals, a dagger and a landing knife belonging to the man's father, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War.

The court, however, declared the search illegal and ordered the FSB officers to return all the confiscated items. The security forces returned everything, except for the dagger and the knife - they were transferred to the police for storage. After that, Yuri Shcherbachev decided to write a statement to the Investigative Committee.
