Russia has not reached a plateau on the coronavirus yet, a peak in the spread of infection can be expected in mid-May, director of the Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) Vasily Akimkin predicted.

In his forecast Akimkin (pictured) agrees with the Kremlin’s position - earlier the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov announced that the number of new infections in the country would reach the plateau exaсtly by May.

Vasily Akimkin confirmed that the dynamics of the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia has been positive, which indicates the effectiveness of the measures taken.

- To say today that we are on the plateau phase is still too early. It is probably better to talk about moderate growth. Most likely, the peak position, in our opinion, will be in mid-May. After mid-May, there will be a decrease in the incidence, ”the head of the research institute said on air of Channel One.

According to Akimkin, both social and natural factors will have an impact on reducing morbidity. He emphasized that nature will play a key role - increasing air temperature, increasing the amount of ultraviolet radiation will contribute to the death of coronavirus.

The expert drew attention to the fact that today there is a dispersal of people and a decrease in contacts. In turn, Peskov specified that much in the situation with the coronavirus will also depend on how Russians behave during the May holidays.

As for the end of the pandemic in Russia, its projected dates have repeatedly changed. The latest "edition" of the forecast for the end of the epidemic in the country belongs to Singaporean scientists who moved it to August.
