The sociologist found out that the Olympians from the Roman and British empires would have been more successful than others.

A curious and original calculation of Olympic medals was made in his publication by sociologist Aleksey Zakharov :

“It turns out that the countries that were part of the USSR received 29 gold medals, 51 silver and 59 bronze medals at the Olympics, and overtook the United States in the total number of medals.

I decided to calculate how many medals were won by countries that were once part of the borders of various historical empires. I must say right away that a separate country could, throughout its history, be part of different empires.

It turned out funny. The first two places are occupied by a wide margin, the Roman and British Empires (81 and 75 gold medals, respectively). Largely because modern-day Britain, with 22 gold medals, was part of both. All other empires are far ahead of some modern states - the USA (39 gold medals), China (38), Japan (27), Great Britain (22), Russia (20) ... "

Of course, the commentators on this post could not help but ask a question about the Mongol Empire. It turned out that at its territorial "maximum", it included: China (38 gold medals) + Russia (20) + Korea (6) + Uzbekistan (3) + Georgia (2) + Turkey (2) + Ukraine, Belarus, Romania (1 each)

Total: the Mongol empire of the 1260s would have won 74 gold medals, that is, it would not have become a winner anyway.

However, there are still such questions:

  1. And the empire of Alexander the Great?
  2. Will the British Empire of the mid-18th century (with the North American colonies and Canada) be cooler than the British Empire of the early 20th century?
  3. And if you count not the USSR, but the Russian Empire - with Finland and Poland?
