Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard from New Zealand will be the first transgender person to compete in the Olympics. She will compete in the weight category up to 87 kg.

The decision on the admission of the athlete was made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Until 2013, the 43-year-old athlete participated in the men's weightlifting competition. After the gender change, she competed in the 2017 World Cup. Then she became the owner of the silver medal. The athlete has already participated in women's competitions, according to the country's Olympic committee.

The committee allowed transgender people to participate in the 2015 Olympics. The only condition is that the level of testosterone in the athlete's body should not exceed a certain threshold.

The Tokyo Olympics will run from July 23 to August 8. It was postponed from last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that he would cancel the event if the country cannot ensure the safety of people during the event. A population survey showed that about 72% of residents of the country would like to see the Olympic Games in Tokyo canceled due to the high risk of contracting the coronavirus.
