Most unnecessary in history: Tokyo Olympics break records of unpopularity

Most unnecessary in history: Tokyo Olympics break records of unpopularity

Not only in Russia practically no one knows the names of Russian athletes performing in Japan, in other countries the situation is not much better.

A week ago, on the eve of the Tokyo Olympics, the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) published the results of a survey dedicated to it. It turned out that the absolute majority of Russians (97%) do not know the name of a single Russian athlete who will perform at the Summer Olympics under a neutral flag.

Legendary hockey player Vyacheslav Fetisov was horrified by these figures from VTsIOM (The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center), and by the fact that almost none of the Russians could remember a single Olympian from the national team. But journalist Kirill Shulika, in turn, believes that this is normal and explains why:

“Russia is a winter country. And before the Games in Beijing, I assure you, the numbers will be completely different. Well, the right word, no one will name biathletes, figure skaters and hockey players?

In Tokyo, there is no Zagitova, there will be no our hockey players. The people do not really respect the Olympic football tournament because of its obvious weakness in comparison with the European Championship and the World Cup. And hockey at the Olympics is always top, and if it is with the NHL at all. And even in the midst of the summer of 2021, the disputes about the native hockey team do not subside.

And all why? Because (no offense), but the management of hockey, figurines and biathlon works better than the "summer" ones. And they do it themselves, not thanks to, but in spite of. They bother with promotion, shows, performances, work with the audience, and attract sponsors themselves.

OCD marketing has objectively not done much for the past couple of years. No work with athletes, no popularization of sports. In general, we are rooting for ours, of course, but we are already waiting for Beijing ... "

Meanwhile, not only in Russia, few people are interested in the Tokyo Olympics. In general, it may go down in history as the most unnecessary, since this trend is observed in other countries.

For example, in the United States, only 17 million viewers watched the opening ceremony. This is 36% less than the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, although it was already considered a failure.

But in Russia, according to the experts of the Nezygar channel, this trend is exacerbated by several factors at once.

First of all, the fact that our country is not legitimized as a state in the Olympics. Athletes from Russia are participating, who, as a special favor, were allowed to use the colors of the national tricolor in their clothes, but nothing more.

The train of doping scandals virtually destroyed the idea of sports victories as one of the drivers of national pride.

“It is not surprising that 97% of Russians do not know by name any participant in the Olympic Games-2020 in Tokyo, and athletes perform mainly for themselves, but not for their country.

But there is one more factor to consider. Russian citizens focus on their everyday problems and any collective action is becoming less and less possible. Even as harmless as watching the Olympics...”, - the experts conclude.
