EU states refuse massive admission of Afghan refugees

None of the EU states agreed to accept refugees from Afghanistan en masse.

This was announced by the head of the European Parliament David Sassoli. Speaking at a forum on strategic security in Slovenia, Sassoli expressed regret over the EU's refusal to accept refugees fleeing the Taliban.

“I am deeply disappointed with yesterday's decision by the EU Home Affairs Council. We have seen many countries outside the European Union that have met and welcomed Afghan asylum seekers, but we do not see a single EU country that would have done the same”, - the REN-TV politician quotes the statement.

He added that the lives of Afghans are in danger, but the people of Europe "lack the courage" to offer them asylum.

“We cannot pretend that the Afghan issue does not concern us, since we participated in this mission, sharing its goals and objectives”, - Sassoli said.

Speaking about the participation of Europe in the mission, Sassoli meant the introduction of NATO troops into Afghanistan, along with the US army units that were in the country from 2001 to 2021. The reason for the introduction of troops was the intentions of the United States to fight international terrorism after the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001. Many observers called the final of the 20-year US mission in Afghanistan "a complete fiasco".

On the eve it became known that the withdrawal of the American contingent from the republic has been completed. In part, it resembled an escape, since the US Army did not manage to take out a lot of military equipment, and was also forced to abandon a large number of specially trained service dogs in the country.

Animals locked in cages are now doomed to an excruciating death by starvation. The weapons abandoned by the Americans, tanks and helicopters were captured by the Taliban. This made them the most armed terrorist group in the world.

At an emergency meeting of the EU Council in Brussels on August 31, European ministers recalled the migration crisis of 2015-2016. They stated that they do not intend to allow it to recur, therefore they will strengthen the borders from the invasion of illegal migrants, and also plan to provide financial assistance to those states that want to take care of the refugees arriving from Afghanistan.

The massive influx of refugees from Afghanistan began simultaneously with the withdrawal of American troops from the country. As soon as the withdrawal became known, representatives of the radical Taliban * launched an offensive throughout the country and on August 15 captured the capital of Kabul. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. Chaos and panic gripped the Republic.

The diplomatic missions of foreign states began an emergency evacuation of their employees and offered assistance in leaving their citizens. In total, Russian planes took out about 500 people, citizens of six countries. At the same time, real chaos reigns at the Kabul airport , about 50 people have died there. And this does not take into account the explosions that the suicide bombers staged on August 26. Then more than 100 people died.

* The movement is recognized as terrorist and is prohibited in the Russian Federation.
