Bundestag approves resolution recognizing Holodomor as genocide

Deputies of the German Bundestag by a majority of votes recognized the Holodomor in Ukraine in the 1930s as a genocide, deliberately organized and supported.

The document was prepared and submitted for discussion by factions of both the ruling parties in Germany - the Social Democratic Party of Germany, the Greens and Free Democrats, and the oppositional conservative CDU / CSU block. Parliamentarians from the Left Party and Alternative for Germany factions abstained.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has already called this resolution an absurdity that distorts historical facts. She recalled that the tragedy of the 1930s affected not only Ukraine, but also many other regions and peoples of the USSR.

"Its main reason was a large-scale crop failure. To a large extent, the countries of the West also contributed to the famine, which demanded that the USSR pay with grain in foreign trade operations with them", - Zakharova said.

Back in 2006 Kyiv recognized the Holodomor as genocide, Moscow does not recognize this decision.

As for Germany, until the very last moment she opposed such a designation of mass famine in famines in 1932-1933.
