Belarusian athlete Yana Maksimova refused to return home after the scandal around her colleague Kristina Timanovskaya.

“Thinking and thinking for a long time, we decided not to return to Belarus. Unfortunately, now there you can lose not only freedom, but also lose your life”, - she wrote on her Instagram.

Now Maksimova, together with her husband Andrey Kravchenko, who became the silver medalist of the 2008 Olympics in the decathlon, is in Germany.

Maksimova performs in the all-around. In June of this year, she won the Belarusian Cup in this discipline, but she could not go to the Tokyo Olympics, since she did not fulfill the Olympic qualification standard. She is also the silver medalist of the 2013 European Pentathlon Championships.

The athlete made the decision not to return to her homeland after a scandal involving another Belarusian athlete at the Tokyo Olympics. We are talking about Kristina Timanovskaya, who was removed from the competition because of her "emotional and psychological state" after she criticized the actions of Belarusian officials who put her to participate in the relay race 4 to 400 without the knowledge of the athlete herself. After the scandal, they tried to forcibly deport Timanovskaya to her homeland. Timanovskaya said that she was afraid to return to the country , as there she could be imprisoned. She applied to the International Olympic Committee, and also asked for political asylum in Europe. The athlete received a Polish humanitarian visa, but decided to go to Austria.
