Representative office of ex-presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya received diplomatic status in Lithuania.

As reported in Tikhanovskaya's telegram channel, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis announced at a briefing that Tikhanovskaya's office was recognized as an official representation of the Belarusian democracy.

“This means that the Belarusian people now have an official representation in the EU countries”, - Novaya Gazeta notes, referring to the statement of the Tikhanovskaya team.

Tikhanovskaya's supporters reported that Lithuania's actions on diplomatic recognition of the office were a new step to delegitimize the Lukashenko regime. Before that, no other EU country had ever made such gestures. However, work is already underway to open similar offices in other countries.

Tikhanovskaya thanked Lithuania for the provided support, noting that “Belarus is not Lukashenko, but the Belarusian people. And now it is officially recognized".

The confrontation between citizens and the authorities in Belarus began in 2020 - after the presidential elections. The country's CEC declared the long-term head of state Alexander Lukashenko the winner. According to the election commission, his main rival Svetlana Tikhanovskaya won only about 10% of them, however, opposition representatives believed that the results were falsified in favor of Lukashenko, and the real results of the voting were "mirror-like".

As a sign of dissatisfaction with numerous electoral fraud, citizens of the country began to take to the streets with protests, demanding a new fair presidential election. The mass demonstrations of citizens were brutally suppressed by the security forces. Repressions began against the disaffected, civic activists, the media and other Internet resources who reported on the rallies. Many prominent politicians were forced out of the country or arrested. Meanwhile, Lukashenko said that there were allegedly no political prisoners in Belarus. Against the background of massive human rights violations in the country, the EU imposed sanctions against Belarus.
