Massive protests have erupted in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, sparked by news of a $1.7 billion coal theft.

According to Kommersant , citing local media reports, the coal was supposed to be exported to China, but residents suggest that corrupt officials stole the goods.

“When trying to storm the Government Palace, the protesters broke the metal gate,” the report says.

During the riots, six people were injured, including four members of the palace's security forces. Until the crowd was able to break into the government residence: the road was blocked for the protesters.

The reason for the speeches of people was the loss of 6.5 million tons of coal worth 40 trillion tugriks ($1.7 billion).

China said it had received less goods than Mongolian officials had reported. 15 high-ranking officials were suspected of being involved in corruption crimes, information about which China handed over to Mongolia. The suspects are currently under investigation.
