According to UN Secretary General António Guterres, the level of extreme poverty in the world in 2020 rose for the first time in 22 years. He stated this at a meeting of the UN Security Council on maintaining peace and stability, reports TASS.

“A decline in economic activity in a fragile situation and in conflict is expected to plunge an additional 18 to 27 million people into poverty”, - he also said.

Guterres believes that a more ambitious approach based on the two principles of the Sustainable Development Goals is needed to overcome poverty. It is about the interdependence of sustainable development and peace, and about engagement.

“The commitment to 'leave no one behind' should be at the center of our efforts both to promote sustainable development and to prevent and resolve conflicts”, - the UN Secretary General stressed.
