Daniela de Ridder, Special Representative of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) for Eastern Europe, met with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, a former presidential candidate in Belarus.

“The Special Representative of the OSCE PA said at a meeting with a representative of the Belarusian opposition in exile that dialogue is needed for normalization in Belarus”, - the statement posted on the website of the assembly says.

During the conversation, issues of human rights and freedoms in Belarus were touched upon. We also talked about political prisoners.

According to Ridder, Tikhanovskaya informed her about the current situation with protests in the republic, that “people are still speaking out and fighting for the expansion of rights and freedoms”.

“She (Tikhanovskaya) also noted that every day the number of political prisoners is growing and recently the courts began to sentence peaceful protesters to several years in prison, who are being prosecuted in criminal cases”, - the release says.

It's worth reminding that the elections for the head of Belarus took place on August 9, 2020. Citizens dissatisfied with the official result of the vote, according to which Alexander Lukashenko won again, went to rallies. Tikhanovskaya herself went to Lithuania, where she is to this day. She was recently nominated by the President of Lithuania for the Nobel Peace Prize. Previously, she had already received the Prize "For Freedom of Thought" by them. Sakharov. The Belarusian candidate for president of the republic was nominated for the award by the largest factions of the European Parliament. Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the international affairs committee of the Russian State Duma, called this rewarding Western interference in the affairs of sovereign Belarus.
