The Japanese government announced that the day before, in the area of Cape Shiretoko on the island of Hokkaido, a Russian An-26 aircraft had invaded Japanese airspace.

Tokyo sent a protest through diplomatic channels to Moscow in connection with the incident. Japanese Cabinet Secretary General Katsunobu Kato demanded to prevent similar incidents in the future.
