The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that the responsibility for the poisoning in the UK of ex-FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko lies with the Russian authorities.

In addition, as follows from the decision of the ECHR, Russia also did not conduct a proper investigation in order to find those responsible for his death.

As follows from the ruling published on the website of the ECHR, the court, with reference to the materials of the British investigation, managed to establish strong evidence that two Russians, Andrei Lugovoy and Dmitry Kovtun, were involved in the poisoning of this person. The Russian authorities were unable to present any meaningful arguments to refute this evidence.

"The court also found that the Russian authorities did not conduct an effective internal investigation that could help establish the facts and, if necessary, the identity of the perpetrators of the murder and the punishment for them," the court ruling notes.

The widow of the deceased Marina, who after the death of her husband changed her last name to Carter, filed a lawsuit with the court. The court ordered to pay her 100 thousand euros in compensation.

We will remind, Litvinenko left the country in 2000 after several criminal cases were brought against him. He left for the UK. Six years later, it became known about his death. He was poisoned with radioactive polonium-210. British authorities blamed Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin for the poisoning of Litvinenko. The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation claims that the accusations against the Russians, allegedly involved in the poisoning of Litvinenko, are fabricated.
