The Santa Fe County Sheriff said in a statement that the shot was fired by actor Alex Baldwin (pictured). No charges have yet been brought against him, Reuters said:
"The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office confirms that two people were wounded by gunfire while filming a scene on the set of the Western Rust. Halina Hutchins, 42, director of photography, and 48-year-old Joel Sousa, director, were injured when 68-year-old producer and actor Alec Baldwin fired a gun for props".
The actor was shooting with blank cartridges, but at the moment of the shot fragments of a bullet scattered and injured two people.
The operator was taken to the University of New Mexico clinic in Albuquerque by helicopter. Doctors could not save her life.
The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Sousa is in critical condition at the hospital.
As it became known, the deceased operator is from the USSR. She was born in Ukraine, raised on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle.
