After an emergency video address to the nation by Russian President Vladimir Putin about the start of a special military operation in the Donbass, reports appeared in the media about explosions and shooting in many cities of Ukraine.

One of the first to report this was the correspondent of the American television channel CNN Matthew Chance during a live broadcast from the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
