“On Sunday, the front page of The New York Times has just a list instead of articles, photographs, or graphics. A long, sad list of people whose lives were taken by the coronavirus pandemic”, - editors said on Saturday.

They explained that the publication was timed to coincide with the fact that in the United States the number of deaths from a disease caused by a virus should reach 100 thousand in the near future. "1 thousand people - this is only one percent of the total number of dead", - stated on the front page.

Employees of the publication studied hundreds of newspapers that appeared in different cities of the United States. They compiled a list of about a thousand names of those people whose publications reported the death of the virus. Journalists took from a printed obituary one phrase that “captures the uniqueness of each lost life,” and also indicated at what age and in which city the person died.

Speaking about the purpose for which this list is being published, one of the editors of The New York Times, Mark Lacy, said: "I wanted people to be able to look at it and understand what loss we suffered in 100 years". Director of Design at The New York Times Tom Bodkin said that over the past 40 years there has never been a case where the front page of The New York Times, in addition to text, would not have placed any image.

Memorial Day is celebrated on Monday in the country. By tradition, on this day, Americans pay tribute to fellow citizens who fell on the fields of all the wars that the United States has ever waged, reports TASS.
