Not having served his term in an American prison, the leader of the largest Russian criminal group in the United States, the Brigade from the Passage, Gidon Abramov, was extradited to Israel, where he will continue to serve his sentence.

For the first time in 54 years of his gangster life, he received such attention from the world press.

Gennady Charodeyev

The popular portal "Israel Union" said that Abramov's group included dozens of crime bosses, natives of the former republics of the USSR. After the FBI imprisoned the "main thief boss" for 25 years, much has changed in the lives of his accomplices. Some have gone into business, others have "quit". Nevertheless, Oleg Bakalchuk, Igor Baltachi (aka Nodar), Flora Gulyan, Mamuka Revishvili, David Gruzin, Boris Alekseev, aka Borya the Afghan and Artur Drubetsky, aka Bald, received different prison sentences. All of them were accused of murder, extortion, kidnapping, robbery and possession of stolen goods.

In the FBI, the defeat of the "Brigade" is called the largest success in the confrontation with the so-called "Russian" mafia in America.

On the day of the verdict at the trial, Gidon suddenly admitted that he cooperated with the investigation. On the instructions of the FBI, he, for example, secretly record conversations of familiar authorities. According to him, he handed over to the competent authorities a "kompru" for 17 people, among whom were the well-known recidivist thieves Marat Krivoy, Vitaly Ivanitsky and Monya Elson. Thus, Abramov saved himself from the "electric chair".

Gidon Abramov made a mistake even in the deal with the investigation: despite cooperation with the FBI, his term was never reduced. When the defense raised this issue before the sentencing, the judge indifferently explained that the defendant began to cooperate with the investigation without signing a standard cooperation agreement with the prosecutor's office beforehand.

By the way, Abramov, a native of Baku, was first arrested in the United States back in 1991: then he was part of a criminal group formed by emigrants from the USSR. During the arrest, firearms, cartridges, an improvised bomb and hand grenades were confiscated from members of the group.

After serving a ten-year sentence, Abramov created his own group. She is responsible for the scandalous robbery of the Michael Ashton Fine Jewelry store on fashionable Madison Avenue in New York. Experts noticed the strangeness of the crimes - as a rule, "Russians" robbed their own - "Russians".

The attackers took out about $ 1 million worth of jewelry from the jewelry store, but left behind a lot of evidence. The robbers broke into the store in broad daylight without masks, talked to the saleswomen in English with a Russian accent, and among themselves in Russian. Therefore, the authorities immediately began looking for the raiders in the Russian community.

According to the Air Force , the detective services were also helped by drops of fresh blood left by one of the bandits on the floor after he smashed a jewelry showcase with his hand. They were checked against an all-American database and found that the DNA belonged to Abramov, from whom genetic material was taken from him after previous arrests.

Surveillance spotted Abramov in Brooklyn driving a Honda Accord, which was fined twice near a jewelry store before being robbed.

Another crime of Abramov was a raid on the house of the owner of the bookstore "St. Petersburg" Natalia Orlova. The bandits pointed a gun at her son, who was 3.5 years old. Later, Orlova recalled that the child then said to Abramov: “If you are a ninja, then why are you here? Go kill Babu Yaga! " The raiders took away from Orlova only a small safe, however, filled to the brim with dollars and expensive women's jewelry.

One of Abramov's crimes generally ended in a shameful failure, since the owner of a Russian restaurant, Tatyana Varzar, flatly refused to give him valuable things, although he beat her on the head and legs with the handle of a pistol, with which she fought off the raider, leaning back in her open car.

According to police estimates, the estimated date for the release of Abramov, if he remained in the United States, is August 15, 2026. In addition, the term in this country is always reduced by about 15% for exemplary behavior.

But in May 2021, Tel Aviv sent a letter to the US Department of Justice stating that it would be nice to extradite Israeli citizen Gidon Abramov to his historical homeland. And there, as you know, they don't keep their own people in prison.

And then Gidon's lawyers argue that the boss "gave up" with the crime. In prison, he became a writer. The books, by the way, are written in good English, and are in great demand in Israel: "Interview with a Thief", "Confessions of a Thief" and "Portrait of a Thief".

They say that exciting detective thrillers of the former leader of the "Russian mafia" in the United States are now urgently translated into Russian and Azerbaijani.
