Deputies of the senate (upper house) of Kazakhstan's parliament have approved legislative amendments that would abolish former president Nursultan Nazarbayev's lifetime chairmanship of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan (APK) and the Security Council (SC).

The plenary session, at which the corresponding decision was made, was broadcast on the website of the chamber.

These amendments were approved earlier - they were first announced on January 19 by deputy Kanat Nurov.

According to the amendments, it seems possible to transfer the powers of the head of the ANC and the Security Council to the president. The law on the Assembly excludes the lifelong right of the first president - Yelbasy - to head it for life, and the law on the Federation Council excludes the lifelong right to head this body.

The parliament is also discussing amendments to constitutional laws that retain Nazarbayev's right to be a member of the Republic's Constitutional Council and speak in government and parliament.

It's worth reminding that after the protests in Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomrat Tokayev approved the resignation of Nazarbayev and promised to carry out reforms. However, bills were submitted to the country's parliament, leaving Nazarbayev the right to influence politics, enter the Constitutional Council and speak to deputies and the country's leadership.

At the same time, Tokayev dismissed people associated with Nazarbayev from senior positions in state organizations.
